Full name: Prof. Dr. Jan Hendrik Jacobus Antonie Greyvenstein aka Vader Greyvenstein / Ou Vadertjie Lifespan: 1878 Barkly East - 1967 [89] Occupation: Academic in Theology Prof. Greyvensteyn⁴ Timeline Prof. Greyvenstein was an academic who served as the very first church lecturer and theological professor for the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk at the Transvaal University College (which later became the University of Pretoria). He was the eldest son of Hendrik Greyvenstein (a sheep farmer) and Gertruida Smit. He interrupted his BA studies to fight as a Cape rebel for the Boer Republics in the Anglo-Boer War. He was captured in 1900 but completed his BA privately by 1902, and finished his local seminary training at the Victoria College (which later become the University of Stellenbosch) in 1905. Early life Stephanus Petrus Engelbrecht was the thirteenth and youngest child of the Voortrekker Gerhardus Engelbrecht (1840 Cradock - 1901 Standerton), who was married twice. He was baptised at Trichardtsfontein on 21 November 1891 by the Reverend M.J. Goddefroy . His father fell in action during the Anglo-Boer War in a battle near his farm, Witbank on 3 June 1901. One of his sons also fell in Natal, and the family lost everything in the war. The southern boundary is Daspoort Ridge, and the northern is the Magaliesberg, or "The bowl of Daspoort Ridge in the south and the crest of the Magaliesberg in the North." Church buildings were a major problem in this region for a very long time, and from the early days, members were accustomed to making do with the minimum in this regard. For example, an old corrugated iron cinema hall was good enough for a long time until the first congregation, North-Western Pretoria, could commission an elegant new building on 2 April 1948 - a day longer than nine years after its separation from Northern Pretoria. View from north (1974)¹ The congregation had grown and increased in numbers to such an extent that the church building in Lynnwood Road could no longer provide sufficient accommodation. Consequently, plans were made and undertaken to erect a larger church building. Suitable land was sought, and the best location found was the site in Waterkloofpark. The location of the building is something special. There is no possibility of street noise or parking problems. Four large erfs were subsequently purchased, each 40,000 sq. ft. Although the congregation had to pay a great deal for the site where the parsonage and church would be erected, it is excellently located in the heart of the parish. A very functional parsonage was built, while the congregation made use of the Wonderboom South Primary School hall for its worship services.
