From as early as 1912 a house on the Vereeniging Road had been used under the name “Excelsior” with Mr D.J.M. Jordaan as hostel father. It began in private houses in Brinkdorp and was formally taken over by the church as a hostel in January 1918. A decision was then made to erect a purpose-built third hostel, which was also named Excelsior. Architect Wynand Louw of Paarl (who had designed Transvalia and Concordia ) drew the plans once again, and Mr J.S. Joubert served as builder. The new building was completed in 1924 at a cost of £10 820 and accommodated 90 boys. After the success of Transvalia , the church proposed a second boys’ hostel, but the request was initially refused by the Administrator in October 1914 because of the country’s strained finances following the 1914 Rebellion. It was later approved, and the cornerstone was laid on 22 April 1916. The completed hostel accommodated 83 boys and three teachers at an original cost of £7 791.1.0. In 1918 it was enlarged by the addition of a study hall and music rooms, bringing the total cost with all improvements to £11,000. In February 1911 the church approached architect Mr Wynand Louw of Paarl to design the building; his plans were approved by May of that year. The hostel was officially opened on 13 February 1913. It was owned and administered by the Nederduitse Gereformeerde / Hervormde Kerkraad and leased to the Education Department, serving initially as accommodation for secondary pupils (with annexes later used for girls). "To harmonize with the Educational Block of the College the hostel is in brick plastered and whitened, with foundations and quoins of local stone, which has pleasant varieties of colour. The roof is of Colonial Marseilles Tiles. The hostel accommodates 40 students in single rooms with rooms for matron and staff and the necessary dining, recreation and changing rooms.
