Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1975 Architect:  Vermooten, Du Plooy & Baker (Willie Oosthuizen) Building contractor:  Weeshuis-bouers Location:  3rd Avenue, Sundra, Mpumalanga. View from north-west (1975)¹ This congregation was established (seceded) on 2 June 1950.  A site was soon purchased, thanks to an alert N.H.S.V. branch. The church hall was inaugurated on 15 September 1951 under the leadership of the late Rev. C. H. Muller. In January 1958, the congregation received their first permanent minister, Rev. J. A. A. Schroeder. He was able to move into his first monument, a comfortable parsonage, in May 1958. Following this, an effective organ was installed in the church hall, and work on a church building commenced immediately. On 4 September 1970, the congregation received Rev. and Mrs P. J. L. Bierman. Under their leadership the congregation was able to inaugurate the church on 15 March 1975. ¹ View...

NH Kerk - Edenvale

Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1974-1975 Architect:  Vermooten, Du Plooy & Baker Building contractor:  Weeshuis-bouers Location:  10th Avenue, Edenvale, Johannesburg. Status: Extant, repurposed after 2022. View from west (1975)¹ The church was inaugurated  in October 1975. Since the founding of the congregation in 1952, there had already been ideals of owning its own church building. However, a church hall was built first, which was commissioned on 23 October 1954. Over the years, the need for a large and effective church building grew increasingly greater. At the beginning of this decade, the congregation's intention to build a church took concrete form when the architects Vermooten, Du Plooy and Baker were approached to draw up building plans for a church to be built next to the old church hall. It was then also decided to simultaneously convert the old church hall into an effective hall for congrega...

Professor Fanie Engelbrecht

Image
Full name:  Professor Stephanus Petrus Engelbrecht Lifespan:  1891 Standerton - 1977 Pretoria [86] Occupation: Theologian, academic, historian, biographer. S.P. Engelbrecht. Unidentified photographer. Timeline Biography Professor Fanie Engelbrecht, was a prominent theologian, leader, and arguably the most significant historian of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (NHKA). Early life Stephanus Petrus Engelbrecht was the thirteenth and youngest child of the Voortrekker Gerhardus Engelbrecht (1840 Cradock - 1901 Standerton), who was married twice. He was baptised at Trichardtsfontein on 21 November 1891 by the Reverend M.J. Goddefroy . His father fell in action during the Anglo-Boer War in a battle near his farm, Witbank on 3 June 1901. One of his sons also fell in Natal, and the family lost everything in the war. This led to the young Fanie being taken into an orphanage in Middelburg, founded in 1902 by Reverend A.P. Burger for war orphans. Despite being a widow an...

NH Kerk - Pretoria-Tuine

Image
Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1972-1974 Architect:  Pieter Smal Building contractor:  Weeshuis-bouers Location:  Cnr Centre & Louise St, Pretoria Gardens. View from south-east (1974)¹ The direct pre-history of Pretoria-Tuine lies in the region known as the Moot, specifically west of the Apies River. The southern boundary is Daspoort Ridge, and the northern is the Magaliesberg, or "The bowl of Daspoort Ridge in the south and the crest of the Magaliesberg in the North." Church buildings were a major problem in this region for a very long time, and from the early days, members were accustomed to making do with the minimum in this regard. For example, an old corrugated iron cinema hall was good enough for a long time until the first congregation, North-Western Pretoria, could commission an elegant new building on 2 April 1948 - a day longer than nine years after its separation from Northern Pretoria. There was ...

NH Kerk - Waterkloofpark (Pretoria-Oos)

Image
Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1972 Architect:  Hendrik Vermooten Building contractor:  Weeshuis-bouers Location:  Dely Rd, Waterkloofpark. View from north (1974)¹ The congregation had grown and increased in numbers to such an extent that the church building in Lynnwood Road could no longer provide sufficient accommodation. Consequently, plans were made and undertaken to erect a larger church building. Suitable land was sought, and the best location found was the site in Waterkloofpark. The location of the building is something special. There is no possibility of street noise or parking problems. Four large erfs were subsequently purchased, each 40,000 sq. ft. The site cost R36,000.00. In c.1972 the Weeshuis-bouers , under the supervision of the architect, Elder Hendrik Vermooten, and the building commission of the church council, began construction. There is seating for 600 members, with plenty of space to plac...

NH Kerk - Heilbron

Image
Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1974 Architect:  Johan de Ridder Building contractor:  Weeshuis-bouers Location:  Cnr Stoffel Nel & Nicol St, Heilbron. View from south-west (1974)¹ Timeline After the Anglo-Boer War, people from the Transvaal moved into the Riemland (as this region was called). Some were forced by circumstance to join the congregations of the NGK. Since there was no Hervormde Church here yet, this was their only recourse. Others deliberately remained members of the NHK and maintained their ecclesiastical privileges in the Transvaal. The region became known as the Riemland (meaning "Land of Leather Thongs") because of the abundance of wild game that once roamed its vast plains. Historically, the area was a prime hunting ground for colonial hunters and trekboers who harvested the skins of large herds of antelope, particularly blesbok and wildebeest. These hides were processed into rieme (p...

NH Kerk - White River / Witrivier

Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built:  1974 Architect:  Dawson & Law (Nelspruit) Building contractor: James Kruger Location:  Cnr Wally Scott and Van Riebeeck St, White River, Mpumalanga View from east (1974)¹ Timeline The Witrivier congregation was founded in 1930 with 22 members under the name of the Plaston congregation. For many years, the congregation was primarily dependent on the ministry of consultants. Growth in membership was very slow, and a church building was erected during 1950. In 1965, Witrivier built a parsonage. Plaston is a rural, agricultural, and small-holding area located close to the main White River town and Nelspruit. When Nelspruit became too large for a combined ministry in 1967 and Witrivier had to withdraw, 204 members undertook the act of faith to form their own ministerial charge. When the parsonage debt was settled in 1970 and the church building became too small, it was decided to erect ...

(Google Street View) The church hall was completed in 1973. The new church was inaugurated on 18 May, 1974.  Die bou-aannemers, N.H.W. Bouers, het die voltooide kerkgebou aan mnr. Vermooten, die argitek, oorhandig, wat dit op sy beurt weer aan die gemeente oorhandig het. The church building, with its 486 seats, is very practically designed with a large liturgical space and a mother's room fully equipped with basins, chairs, a loudspeaker, cribs, and one-way glass. The hearing system for the deaf is of a radio type and, if the earpiece is clipped to the ear, the preacher can be heard clearly up to five meters outside the church building. The organ used in the previous church building was enlarged, and its sound was specially ada...

Aka:  Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa) Built: 1974 Architect: Hartman & Van der Walt Building contractor: Weeshuis-bouers Location: 10th Avenue, Wonderboom South View from west (1974)¹ In 1970 the concregation seceded from that of Northern Pretoria. The necessary land had to be found for the construction of a parsonage and, later, a church building. Although the congregation had to pay a great deal for the site where the parsonage and church would be erected, it is excellently located in the heart of the parish. A very functional parsonage was built, while the congregation made use of the Wonderboom South Primary School hall for its worship services. Interior view (1974) ¹ After the building commission visited a number of architects, it was decided to award the commission for designing the new church to the firm Hartman and Van der Walt of Pretoria.
