Edward Nathan was the founding partner of the Johannesburg law firm Edward Nathan & Friedland, established in 1905. This firm specialized in commercial law, particularly serving the mining, property, and industrial sectors during Johannesburg's rapid growth in the early 20th century (post-gold rush era and after the Union of South Africa in 1910).
During the 1920s he was in partnership with Colonel Reginald Blaine Saner.
Edward Nathan & Friedland grew into a prominent commercial law practice through the 20th century. In 1999, Edward Nathan & Friedland was acquired by Nedbank. In 2006, it merged with Cape Town-based Sonnenberg Hoffmann Galombik (founded 1936) to form Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs (now branded as ENSafrica or ENS), currently Africa's largest law firm with over 600 practitioners.
