History + photos

The building with wooden verandahs and a central clock tower in Joubert Street (c.1895) was designed to be temporarily used by the Government Postal and Telegraph Services. It was the property of the Goldreich Brothers. In c.1903 it was converted into the first His Majesty's Theatre.

The first Post Office was housed in the Government Buildings in Rissik Street, fronting onto the Market Square. This was one of the first buildings to be erected (1897) in Johannesburg on a "permanent" basis. During the period of construction part of the Post Office was housed in Goldreich Buildings in Joubert Street. The words "Paketten Kantoor" were adjacent to "His Majesty's Theatre - Gallery Entrance" in Joubert Street. (SAAR, Aug 1947.) The well-known building apparently neve regained its glory after the Post Office moved.
