The building was a hostel at Heidelberg Normal College / Teacher's College. It included a principal's residence.

"To harmonize with the Educational Block of the College the hostel is in brick plastered and whitened, with foundations and quoins of local stone, which has pleasant varieties of colour. The roof is of Colonial Marseilles Tiles. The hostel accommodates 40 students in single rooms with rooms for matron and staff and the necessary dining, recreation and changing rooms. The Principal’s house, for economy in cooking, is connected to the hostel by a covered way."²

It was renovated in 1939.¹ In 1967, the Normal College was taken over by the South African National Defence Force and became the Leërgimnasiumbasis (Army Gymnasium base).
