Planning started in 1965. The architect initially refused to accommodate the congregation's wishes, but later obliged, and his revised design was accepted. The contractor was to be the Weeshuis-bouers (Mr. Van Delft and Herbst), but due to their heavy workload, declined. The construction cost was estimated to be way over budget, but was reduced by appointing a different contractor / foreman. The construction was completed within ten months.
