NH Kerk - Witpoortjie, Roodepoort
Aka: Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk (Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa)
Built: 1972-1973
Architect: Unidentified
Location: Payne St, Witpoortjie, Roodepoort.
The congregation seceded from Roodepoort in 1958. The congregation began with a professing membership of fewer than 300, four stands in Witpoortjie, seventy chairs, one small table, and £650.
During the nine years that Rev. J.A. Swanepoel was in Witpoortjie, a parsonage (1960) and a church hall (1961) were built. By the middle of 1969, a massive expansion of the Witpoortjie suburb took place. Three additional stands were purchased in a new, expanding area, Wilropark, and the land on which the church hall stood was exchanged with the Town Council of Roodepoort for a much larger and better-situated piece of land to build the new church complex. The town council paid thirty thousand rand for the church hall to convert it into a library.
On 18 November 1972, the cornerstone of the new church building was laid by Rev. D. J. Dreyer, the local minister. The inauguration of the new church building took place on 13, 14, and 15 April 1973. Friday 13 April was the inauguration of the hall with a congregational bazaar. This was preceded by the unveiling of the hall's nameplate (Martie Dreyer Hall). Saturday 14 April at 3:00 pm was the dedication of the new church building.¹
